Goal I: Leadership and Innovation

I.a: Students are able to evaluate critically, reflect, and problem solve individually as well as collaboratively.

For this assignment, I worked with a classmate to analyze an existing library policy–in this case, a policy concerning library card eligibility and responsibilities–for its alignment with professional codes of ethics and make revisions to that policy to reflect professional values like information access.

I.b: Students demonstrate effective communication skills.

For my final project in Cultural Heritage Institutions and Libraries, I chose to write an article about cultural heritage for submission to the journal Florida Libraries. One of the main goals of this course was to help students understand libraries as cultural heritage institutions in their own right, in accordance with a statement from the International Federation of Libraries and Archives (IFLA) calling for the recognition of “libraries as crucial actors in the safeguarding of cultural heritage” (particularly documentary heritage) to advocate for their inclusion in global cultural heritage policy. I decided to use this assignment as an opportunity to communicate to library professionals across the state the role that libraries can play in preserving the documentary heritage of their local communities, using examples of library participation in Tampa’s 2024 Archives Awareness Week as a case study.

I.c: Students participate in professional and community engagement activities in the field.

Co-Curricular: Henry B. Plant Museum

Over the summer of 2024, I volunteered with the archives/collections department of the Henry B. Plant Museum in Tampa, Florida. My main project was taking inventory of the materials in the museum’s archival collections.

I.d: Students demonstrate leadership skills and innovation in a diverse and global environment.

For this project, I came up with a project proposal for the digitization of a library’s most popular archival collections that were in danger of being damaged. I identified the resources required for the project and potential project partners within the library. I also came up with a plan to assess the success of the project, a budget, and a timeline for the project’s completion.

LIS 6026 Disaster Recovery Plan

One of the most important skills for leadership is the ability to manage and direct others to realize a shared goal. One of the crucial functions of archives is the long-term preservation of the collections it stewards. For this assignment, I created a disaster recovery plan for a university archives. This plan is meant to help archives employees appropriately respond to a variety of disasters that archives are susceptible to, including prevention measures, immediate responses, and procedures to salvage different kinds of materials that have sustained different types of damage.
